Introduction of the Institute

The Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering is an entity organization and main body of the discipline of water conservancy and hydropower engineering. The discipline of hydropower engineering was founded in 1952. In 1984, it obtained the right to grant master's degree.  In 1993, it obtained the right to grant doctoral degree and established the post-doctoral mobile station. In 1996, it was approved as the key discipline of the Ministry of Water Resources, and its hydropower test center was evaluated as the key laboratory of the Ministry of Water Resources. The institute has a group of high-level and accomplished academic leaders, including 10 doctoral supervisors, 12 professors and teachers with doctoral or master's degrees. In recent years, it has cultivated more than 30 doctors and 200 masters for our country. At present, there are more than 130 master's students and more than 30 doctoral students in the university. 

The research institute was equipped with a 1200 test hall and a modern hydropower station transient flow test control center. It has established three sets of model turbine, generator, exciter and governor, which can simulate various operation conditions of hydropower station and reproduce various transient processes of hydropower unit and water conveyance system. The test conditions provided by the research institute including test space, model head, model flow and measuring device are of first-class level in China. The self-developed needle valve flow sectional regulation and control device has its own characteristics in China. A computer dynamic data automatic monitoring and processing system has been developed, and the instruments and programs for hydraulic and structural model tests and computer simulation analysis have been equipped. The system can solve the key technical problems in hydraulic and structural aspects for large-scale hydropower stations, pumped storage power stations and pumping stations.

The institute has been responsible for and undertaken more than 70 projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, the National Key Scientific and Technological projects, major science and technology projects at the provincial level, projects to be Promoted for National Scientific and Technological achievements and research projects entrusted by production units, with a scientific research fund of 30 million yuan. The outcome has won one second prize, two third prizes of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, ten provincial and ministerial prizes, published nearly 180 papers in the main core journals at home and abroad, four monographs and twelve textbooks.
